About KTC
Keep time for children is an initiative of Relationships
Foundation, a 'think-and-do tank' that believes that good society
needs healthy relationships. It was conceived in 2002 in the light of
strong evidence about the extent of weekend working driven by the growth
of the 24/7 society in the UK and in particular the rapid expansion of
the retail and leisure sectors.
Keep time for children is based on research, education and lobbying for
changes in the law. Its key objective is to promote the relational
benefits of parents spending time with children, particularly in terms
of investing in the future by:
-
Raising awareness of the impact of the long hours culture and
particularly atypical working hours on children, parents, employers
and society.
-
Building a culture of promoting the child's identity, security and
self-worth within the family circle.
-
Highlighting the importance of shared weekend family time and putting
forward practical ideas to assist in creative and enjoyable use of
time.
-
Promoting best practice for both parents, extended family members and
employers to adopt ways of working that are more conducive to family
life and enable quality time to be spent with children.
-
Obtaining the best possible information from employers, trade unions
and independent research of the extent of parental weekend working
across the UK economy, sector by sector and over time.
-
Seeking new legislation that will protect shared time off for
families. A key focus will be on requiring all employers to allow
'parent employees' (with school age children) either Saturday or
Sunday off each week, so that there is at least one day off during
term time when parents and children can spend time together.
